Dame Daphne Littlewood Winkworth, relict of a rather celebrated historian, the late P.B. Winkworth. A tall, dark, handsome lightheavyweight with a formidable personality, mother of Gertrude and Huxley, sister of Charlotte, Emmeline, Harriet and Myrtle Deverill. Aunt of Esmond Haddock, whose country house (Deverill Hall) she and her sisters infest in The Mating Season, and Claude Duff. Headmistress of a fashionable girls' school near Eastbourne (from which she is retired in The Mating Season only) and godmother of Madeline Bassett. Wants to marry Lord Emsworth in Galahad at Blandings and is foiled thanks to the efforts of Galahad. Fires Jeff Bennison from his job teaching drawing at her school in Sunset at Blandings.
