Puffy Benger, remembered in Galahad Threepwood's memoirs
in Summer Lightning and Heavy Weather as Gaily Stale's accomplice in the theft
of old Wivenhoe's pig in '95 at Hammers Easton; the pig
was coated with phosphorus and left at Plug Basham's
bedside at 2 AM to take him out of himself when he had
been brooding on something for several days. Then they beat
the gong and the experience gave Plug Basham all the fresh
interests he could do with. Had a niece named Myrtle who
he claimed could play Chopin's Funeral March in 48 seconds.
Remembered by Gaily in Galahad at Blandings as a member of the old
Pelican Club in the '90's, a keen golfer who got irretrievably
hooked into marriage because in a careless moment he
allowed a girl to lure him into reading "Pale Hands I Loved
Beside the Shalimar" to her. Now the father of a son with
adenoids and two daughters with braces on their teeth.
