Rodney Spelvin, cousin of the actor George, a tall, dark-haired,
slim, sickeningly handsome poet who fails to qualify for the
hand of Jane Packard in Rodney Fails to Qualify, the first of three golfing
stories told about him by the Oldest Member. In Jane Gets off the Fairway he is
famous as the author of The Purple Fan, a romantic novel in
the neo-decadent style. In The Purification of Rodney Spelvin he is purified by the golfing
instruction of Bill Bates' sister Anastatia. Married to Anastatia
in Rodney Has a Relapse with a son named Timothy; writes mystery
thrillers but suffers a relapse into poetry.
