Sergeant Collard, an ex-sergeant of his Majesty's army, served in India until disabled by sunstroke; school sergeant at Sedleigh in Mike and Stone and the Weed. W.J. Stone, whom he catches smoking, calls him "Boots." Has a son named Ernie.
